“I hate my life”: 7 Ways to Change Things for The Better
“I hate my life – I just do”
Writing in a journal can really help you change your mindset about your life. Not only does writing naturally help you to express and better understand your own thoughts but taking time to stop and consider your day can help you identify things that you like and things that you want to change. There are lots of different ways to keep a journal, here are three styles to help you hate your life less.
Gratitude: If you hate your life, it might be because you are too focused on all the things that you lack. Try, instead, to consciously think of things in your life that you do have and are grateful for. Take a few minutes each day to write down 1-5 things that you are thankful for. Be specific and don’t repeat the same things each day. If you can’t think of anything new to add, keep thinking. There are more things to be grateful for, you must seek them to see them. Check out this printable gratitude journal for this practice.
Positivity: Another reason you might think you hate your life is that you’re filled with negative thoughts and feelings. If so, try a positivity journal. Each day stop and write three positive things. Write one positive thing about yourself, one positive thing about your life in general, and one positive thing about the world. This might be a struggle at the beginning, but as you continue to write these three things each day you will train your brain to look for reasons to love your life instead of hating it. Here’s a printable positivity journal for this practice.
Daily Reflection: If you don’t want to write a gratitude journal or a positivity journal you can go a more traditional route with a daily reflection journal. You can take time to write about what happened each day and how you feel about it. If you need more direction to get you started, write about one thing that made you happy today, one thing that made you sad or upset today, and one thing that you’d like to change or do differently in the future. This will allow you to express yourself and really evaluate your life in preparation for change. … And here’s a printable thought journal for that.
2. Create Goals
“I hate my life because it’s pointless”
If that sounds like you, then you must understand that you can always alter or change it. Set goals to make the changes that will rid your life of the things you hate and fill it with things that you love and that make you happy. Go ahead and make a grand list of all the things that you’d like to change.
Don’t let this list overwhelm you! Pick one thing that you want to work on now. Set a goal to change that thing and plan steps that will help you reach that goal. Don’t give up until you reach your goal, and when you do, pick another change and set a new goal. As you reach each goal you can cross it off your list and know that you are working towards the life you want. Each step is taking you farther from hating your life and closer to where you want to be, even the baby steps.

3. Improve Your Diet
“I hate my life because I never look or feel good”
We are what we eat… While this is a cute little saying, there is a lot of truth to it. What you eat has a big impact on your overall health and that includes how you feel. If you want to have more energy for life, and want to keep yourself healthy, you need to eat well and do something to improve your diet.
You can choose to stop drinking soda, or even just limiting soda to once a day if you drink it all day long. You can start adding a fruit to your afternoon snack or a veggie each night to dinner. Maybe you need to cut back on sweets or maybe salty, highly processed foods are your weakness. Find one thing that you can do to eat better.
You can also improve your diet by cooking more of your meals at home. Eating out not only costs more, but it usually isn’t as healthy as the food is often high in calorie and low in nutrients. When you cook at home you can save money and control what you eat. So instead of eating out for lunch each day, or worse just snacking on junk food to tide you over, start preparing food at home and packing it with you for work each day. Your budget and health will thank you.
“I hate my life because it’s exhausting”
One of the best ways to improve your health and to find more energy is to get up and move around. Just a few minutes of exercise each day will help you feel better about yourself and your life. When you exercise your body releases endorphins, which are a hormone that helps to reduce pain and produce a positive feeling. Exercising can help you feel good, have a brighter outlook on life, sleep better, and feel proud of yourself for taking steps to improve.
You don’t have to go to a gym or start jogging if you don’t enjoy those activities… You could dance, play tennis, swim, bike, shoot hoops, do Pilates, walk your dog, or use your favorite videogame workout. All that matters is that you find an activity that works for you and use it to get your body moving for a few minutes each day.
5. Do Things You Enjoy
“I hate my life because it’s boring”
You won’t hate your life if you are doing things that you enjoy. Think of all the things you like doing and make a list. Then, each day, find at least one small thing on the list to do. Eat outside. Send a letter. Call a friend. Use your favorite lotion. Sing in the shower. There are plenty of small things that you enjoy, and you can find time for at least one of them each day.
For the things that you enjoy that take more time, plan them into your schedule, and make them a priority. You may also find new things that you enjoy as you go about living life. When you find something new that you enjoy, make sure that you add it to the list, so you can remember to do it more often.
6. Learn Something New
“I hate my life because it’s always the same”
If you hate what you are doing with your life now, you might enjoy doing something new. If there is a hobby or skill that you’ve always wanted to have, then go for it. Start learning to paint, or how to program computer games. Learn to tie a beautiful bow out of the ribbon or how to patch drywall. You could learn a new trivia fact about animals or history.
Whether you choose to learn something small or to start practicing and perfecting a new hobby, learning something new each day will help you learn what you enjoy doing and give you a sense of accomplishment.
If you don’t already have an idea in mind go look for lists on the internet. There are plenty of ideas on learning new things, just a click away! Here’s one to begin with.
7. Always Reevaluate Your Thoughts
“I hate my life because I can’t be happy”
Whenever you catch yourself hating your life, try to stop, reevaluate your thoughts and start making choices about how you want to live it – you are the master of your destiny! Take a good look at where you are in life and how you spend your time. Then, make decisions that will help you make the changes you need to make in order to improve yourself and your life, and take you the happy place you want to be in.
Take it one day at a time, but never stop moving towards your goals. Don’t forget to help others along the way. You don’t need to hate your life… Make at least one change today so that you can love your life real soon.
