As time passes, subtle signs of aging start appearing on our faces and give away all the secrets. It may be crow’s feet, smile lines, or wrinkles, and each one of them will tell the tales of your time. Today I want to discuss one particularly noticeable effect of aging, and this is… The lip wrinkles.
What Causes Lip Wrinkles?
Lip wrinkles are a result of reduced collagen production, which causes the lips to become thinner and wrinkled. With age, the collagen production drops, so both your actual lips and the skin around them start to sag and lose tone. Another reason to see lip wrinkles around your lips is that through life, we’re smiling – a lot! The repeated action of smiling contributes to the sagging of facial muscles and makes the lip wrinkles even more noticeable.
Can You Get Lip Wrinkles At a Young Age?
While most people experience them as the first sign of aging, they can also appear due to genetics or stress. There are plenty of women who notice their first lip wrinkles as soon as they turn 30.
There is nothing quite as distressing as seeing your once plump and full lips getting filled with lip wrinkles, but don’t worry, because you can reduce them or at least make them less noticeable! In this article, I am discussing a few natural methods that will help you to get rid of lip wrinkles and bring those beautiful lips back to life.
How To Get Rid Of Lip Wrinkles: Simple Solutions That Work
1. Use sun protection
Even though we don’t realize it, our lips need just as much sun protection as any other part of our face. A lot of women seem to forget their lip care, which results in saggy, wrinkled lips. Not only the lips, but the skin around your lips is also susceptible to harmful rays and needs special protection from the sun.
While using sunscreen won’t eliminate lip wrinkles by itself, the first thing you want to do is simply stop the progression of the problem. All other actions won’t be as effective if you’re not willing to use sun protection from now on.
- For the skin around your lips, invest in a sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF, and make sure to apply it every 2 hours while you are out in the sun.
- For the lips, your best bet is to buy a lip balm with a sun shield and reapply it throughout the day to prevent the drying effect on the lips.
2. Exfoliate your lips
Exfoliating your lips is a fantastic way to remove dead skin, which reveals new skin underneath and may help you to make lip wrinkles less noticeable. If you want to keep your lips looking fresh and plump, exfoliate your lips at least once a week.
Not only exfoliating can reduce your lip wrinkles, but it can also improve dark and uneven-toned lips.
You can buy an exfoliator or make one at home, and since I love home remedies for beauty, here’s an easy lip scrub that you can make in under five minutes! Just mix a tablespoon of brown sugar with one tablespoon of olive oil (add some honey if you have it), and massage it on your lips in a circular motion. This lip scrub will gently exfoliate and moisturize your lips, which can help you to get rid of lip wrinkles naturally (or at least make them softer).

3. Regularly massage your lips with Vitamin E oil
Vitamin E is a potent anti-oxidant, and it does wonders to promote collagen production in the skin0. You can rub a few drops of Vitamin E oil on your lips and the skin around the lips twice a day to plump them up. A gentle massage can also help to smooth all the fine lines and lip wrinkles.
If you want a stronger action for lip wrinkles, I recommend Bio-Oil, which is a super-popular natural oil blend that works wonders on scars, stretch marks, and signs of aging (including lip wrinkles):
I mean, this stuff is superb! It helped me to get rid of small wrinkles on my face + 12.000+ people on Amazon gave it a 4 or 5-star review, so I guess I’m not alone! This face oil is very hydrating, soft, and powerful when dealing with all kinds of skin disturbances – a true must-have in every girl’s skincare routine.
4. To get rid of lip wrinkles, do face workouts! 😯😙😯😙
The muscles in our bodies are designed to keep their tone, and they’re toned the most when they are regularly and correctly worked out. Just like the rest of the body, the facial muscles also require exercise to keep the muscles strong and toned, which can help you to prevent lip wrinkles and lip lines. (Don’t worry, there’s no need to attempt weight lifting with your lips).
You can choose a lip exercise and repeat it at least 20 times daily for the best results:
- For the first method, close your mouth and lift one corner of the mouth to turn your lips into a half-smile. Repeat on both sides.
- The second method is to attempt to make a big “O” shape with your mouth while keeping your teeth hidden with your lips.
These exercises will gently stretch your lips and tone the muscles around them (to increase elasticity and reduce lip wrinkles over time). Facial exercise may feel useless at first, but with patience, you can notice a visible change in the appearance of your lips and a reduction in lip wrinkles.

5. Drink plenty of water
Believe it or not, this one is a no-brainer. Your body needs water, and if you are dehydrated, the result is parched skin, dry patches, and – you guessed it – lip wrinkles! Aim to get at least eight glasses of water every day to give your body the hydration it needs. You may also notice a general improvement in your body health along with improved skin texture and reduced lip wrinkles.
6. Take collagen supplements
Nowadays, there are a lot of collagen supplements that allow you to literally ingest collagen to strengthen the skin and minimize lip wrinkles thanks to that.
Since collagen is naturally produced in our body, collagen supplementation is generally a safe way to, well, have more collagen in your body! Collagen is that also helps your joints, bones, hair, and nails to stay healthy.
How To Get Rid Of Lip Wrinkles If These Solutions Don’t Help?
Everyone has a different situation with their lip wrinkles, so it’s natural that some of us will find our skin needed more help than just good anti-aging skincare.
Even if it happens, you still have options. Skin clinics and beauty estheticians now offer a wide variety of anti-aging skincare procedures. Most of them are very effective in treating lip wrinkles and improving your overall facial aesthetics. Here are some things you can consider:
- Hyaluronic acid injections can fill your lip wrinkles from within and make them a lot less noticeable.
- Botox injections are very effective at reducing (or even completely removing) smile lines.
- Microdermabrasion, derma rolling, and acid peels can noticeably increase the production of collagen in your skin.
- Plastic surgery can give you a skin lift thus evening out the appearance of lip wrinkles (yet it’s recommended to start with other skin procedures before turning to this).
All of these skin procedures, especially the anti-wrinkle injections, are very effective at getting rid of lip wrinkles. However, some of them come with a downside of skin irritation and the healing process, and all of them can be pricy (depending on where you live).
One more option to try is lip shading. While it may not tackle the wrinkles directly, subtle and professional lip shading can make the lip lines appear less visible. Plus, it saves you valuable time getting ready in the morning!
Lip Wrinkles Are NOT Your Enemy
These were some methods that you can quickly implement in your daily life to reduce lip wrinkles and enjoy younger skin around your lips. Make sure to hydrate, moisturize, and use sunscreen to achieve the best results! And, at the end of the day, remember that even with lip wrinkles, these are your lips. Love them, embrace them. It is a part of your body that carries you through this life.
