Let’s be honest, a day at the spa being pampered would be amazing, but it isn’t always possible.
Sometimes that’s because of costs, sometimes it might be hard to get an appointment, and sometimes you just don’t want to leave the house… Not to worry, you can have a relaxing hair spa day at home!
You can have a quiet personal day to yourself or invite a few of your good friends over for a pampering hair spa day party.
It’s your day, spend it in whatever way will rejuvenate you most.
How to Have a Hair SPA At Home
But First – Why Have a Hair Spa At All?
There are plenty of good reasons to have a hair spa at home:
- It is a great way to take care of your hair if it is damaged and needs a little healing and love.
- Hair spa treatments help to eliminate dandruff and reverse the damage.
- You can also use it to help your hair reach its full potential even if it’s not damaged since hair spa treatments add shine and moisture to your hair.
- It is also a great way for you to practice self-care and to relieve stress and tension.
So, whether you are repairing damage, getting ready to look your best, or caring for your emotional and mental wellbeing, it’s time to plan a hair spa day at home!
Hair SPA Day: Getting started
To get started you’ll want to create an environment for your hair spa day.
You can put on your favorite show, movie, or music to enjoy while you pamper your hair.
You can indulge in some delicious snacks to nibble on.
You can light some candles or use some air freshener to enthrall your sense of smell and create a relaxing mood.
You can wear fuzzy socks or a plush robe to get extra comfortable.
You know what helps you relax, so gather those things and make your home as comfortable and peaceful as a spa!
6 Easy Hair SPA Steps
Shampoo, Massage, and… RELAX
Before you start any special hair treatments, you should clean your hair to remove any dirt or product from it.
Even this can be a part of your hair spa day relaxation, though.
Use a shampoo that you love the smell of and really take your time.
You may find a shampoo that leaves your head tingling to be especially relaxing.
As you apply the shampoo, massage your entire scalp in small circular motions.
Take a few moments to stretch and release tension as you massage.
Let go of any tightness that you may have in your jaw and stretch your neck gently to each side.
After you’ve massaged the shampoo into your hair from roots to ends, and released muscle tension, rinse the shampoo out while gently running your fingers through your wet hair.
Now, gently squeeze the excess water from your hair and towel it dry.
You don’t need to get your hair completely dry, but you don’t want it dripping down your back either.
Moisturize with Oil or a Deep Treatment Hair Mask
Now that your hair is clean, it is ready for you to lock in moisture so that it can stay healthy and soft.
A great way to do this is to massage oil or deep treatment mask into your hair.
You can find various products for this at most drugstores, but you can also create your own cream mixture at home or even just use some olive oil from your kitchen.
There are plenty of easy “recipes” for moisturizing hair-treatment creams online, so you can easily pick one that sounds good, you may even have all of the ingredients already.
Whichever treatment you want to use, take your hair a section at a time and begin massaging it from the roots down the shaft to the ends.
You can use gentle pulling motions as you slowly work the mask or oil to the ends.
You can also finger through your hair to make sure that you are fully coating each strand of hair.
This is a great time to make use of a show or movie to entertain you since this process will take some time but doesn’t need your undivided attention.
After your hair is fully coated, wrap it into a bun (or several) on your head so that it’s ready for the next step.

Steam Your Hair
The next step in your hair spa day journey is to steam your hair!
If you haven’t done this before, steaming can sound pretty intimidating, but don’t worry – it’s actually really easy.
You can use a hair steamer tool if you already own one, but you can also steam your hair without any special tools.
All you really need is a towel and some hot water.
You can heat the water in a bowl in the microwave or in a pot on the stove.
After your water is heated, submerge the towel in the water.
Ring the excess water out of the towel so that it isn’t dripping.
Wrap your hair (in buns) with the hot, moist towel.
You will want to leave the towel on for at least ten minutes and up to a half hour.
If you want to get even more out of your steaming hair spa day treatment, you can put a plastic shower cap or plastic bag over the towel to help trap the steam.
Rinse
When you’ve finished steaming your hair, remove the towel (and bag).
Let your hair down from the bun(s) and allow it to cool.
After your hair is cool, you should use cold water to rinse all of the cream and excess oil from your hair.
Do not use hot water!
The cold water helps to lock the moisture in by sealing the hair cuticles on your head.
Apply Leave-In Conditioner
To go an extra mile for your lock on a hair SPA day, apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner to further moisturize and nourish your beautiful hair.
Choose a product that tackles a lot of different hair issues to make the most out of it.
I personally had wonderful results with the Morrocanoil conditioners:

After Your Hair SPA, It’s Best To Air Dry
You’ve just put so much love into your hair and you definitely don’t want to waste it by blow-drying your hair.
You will get better results if you allow your hair to air dry.
This is also a great excuse to have your pampering hair spa day last just a little bit longer.
So, enjoy a bit more relaxing and some more of your show as you untangle your hair with your fingers and let it dry.
Hair SPA Is Not Just Something You Get At The Salon
You can make your hair healthier, shinier, and softer with a simple at-home hair spa day.
Not only does this wonders for your hair, but you will probably feel more relaxed as well.
Your hair, wallet, and inner-peace are will thank you for taking some me-time.
As with all hair stuff, don’t forget to repeat your at-home hair spa day again soon to keep you and your hair at your best.
