Woman With Tomato Skincare Mask

There’s a new obsession in the skincare world that promises you to get beautiful glass skin with a vegetable most of us love… The tomato!

Indeed, beauty forums are getting filled up with posts about natural skincare masks, serums, and cleansers that are made out of tomatoes – but is this new trend really healthy for your skin?

Side effects of applying tomato on face are very common, and it is still debatable if this beautiful vegetable is more helpful or harmful to your skin. There are people who say that tomatoes are great for your skin. But there are also people who say that tomatoes are too irritating for the skin. What’s with these tomato myths? This article will discuss the benefits and side effects of applying tomato on face, so you can make your own informed decision based on the latest data.

Applying Tomato On Your Face – The Good And The Bad

Most of us think that tomatoes are very good for skin. And, yes they are! However, they should not be used excessively or in large quantities because it may lead to negative side effects of applying tomato on face. First of all, let us start with the basics.

Benefits Of Applying Tomato On Face

We all know that tomatoes contain a lot of vitamins. Skin is one of those organs that needs a lot of nutrition so the tomato is helpful in providing those vitamins and minerals to your skin. When you apply tomato on your face, you can expect that it will boost the absorption of the essential vitamins and minerals into your skin cells, resulting in healthier, glowing, and clear skin.

Tomatoes are also rich in beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is a kind of carotenoid that is beneficial for your skin (and can even protect your skin from UV rays!) so, applying tomato on face is one of the ways to make your skin stronger and healthier. Tomatoes also contain vitamins C, E, as well as folic acid and iron.

Tomatoes can prevent or reduce acne by balancing the PH of your skin, and even minimize the number of bacteria on your skin.

But apart from these important benefits, there are many more benefits that you get with tomatoes! The above list is only a small sample of the benefits of using tomatoes on your skin, but tomatoes are also great for your body.

  • Tomato has been proven to reduce fat in the body.
  • Tomatoes are also known to improve the immune system by boosting it.
  • Tomatoes can help you to prevent common colds.
  • Tomatoes are very versatile – you can find them in skincare products, skin creams, and even natural tomato soap!

In general, tomatoes can work wonders for your skin and body, and you can expect to see a notable difference in your skin texture while using them.

Side Effects Of Applying Tomato On Face

While the health benefits are certainly great, there are some drawbacks. One of the drawbacks is that there are quite a few negative side effects of applying tomato on face! Let’s look at them.

1. Acid-caused rash or irritation

While using tomatoes to treat your skin is tempting, it is better to at least avoid tomatoes that have a high amount of acid. The acid found in tomatoes can be harmful to your skin and cause an acid-induced rash or irritation. If you continue to apply tomato on a face that is already irritated, your skin can get even more irritated, to the point it develops small wounds.

2. Peeling, burning, and stinging

Side effects of applying tomato on face (usually as a mask) also include redness, peeling, skin irritation, burning, and stinging. Therefore, using tomatoes for skincare can create a lot of trouble for people who are unaware of what type of masks make their skin problematic.

Because of how potent tomatoes are, it’s best to avoid them if you have sensitive or reactive skin.

3. Itchy skin

Using tomatoes on your face can cause skin itchiness too. This is related to the irritating properties of acidic tomato juices, and the high exfoliating power of tomato pastes. Therefore, it’s best to avoid using tomatoes for skin that is prone to itching or dryness.

Note: as for the side effects of tomatoes, they can also harm our bodies when we are drinking them. If you will keep drinking tomato juice every day, you will get thick mucus on your throat and nose. This is called chronic tomato throat. It can cause bad breath and coughing and if your throat and nose become dry, you might even experience difficulty in breathing and talking properly.

Are There Any Alternatives For Tomatoes In Natural Skincare?

It is important for us to take good care of our skin. But, applying tomato on face may not be the best thing to do. It might worsen the situation. So, instead of using tomatoes, here’s what you can choose to get similar results with less irritation!

Use lemon to cleanse your skin.

Lemons sound scary, but, properly diluted, they can be a lot gentler on your skin than tomatoes. Lemon helps to detoxify our skin and make it look healthy and fresh. It also has anti-inflammatory properties to ease the swelling. Again, just make sure to dilute lemon juice with water (a teaspoon of lemon juice in half a cup of water is perfect).

Milk is also a good option!

Milk helps to moisturize your skin and give it an overall glow, thanks to the gently exfoliating lactic acid that milks has plenty of. However, it should be strictly avoided if you’ve been recently applying tomato on your face. This is because the tomato might irritate your skin and lactic acid will only irritate further. Allow your skin to calm down first, then use milk to treat your face.

And that’s it! Those are the side effects of applying tomato on face. As you can see, there are many amazing benefits of tomato-based skincare treatments, but they might come with their own cost. If you are planning to use tomatoes or tomato products, make sure to apply them only at night before going to bed. This way, you still have some time until morning for the skin to calm down (you know, in case it gets irritated!).
