Often, we end up blaming the circumstances or the people around us for the things that are happening to us. These thoughts and actions take our focus from the problems that could be solved and make us project our anger to other people and things we “can’t” control. We think that everything that is happening to us is only our fate and that we have no control over it.
It is very easy to feel this way because it allows us to blame others and not to worry about solving our issues. It takes quite a lot of courage to take responsibility for the things happening in our lives… And that is why we find it easier to blame it on others.
Yet in reality, you have more control over our life than you think you do. If you keep on shifting the blame onwards, you won’t be able to live a happy and fulfilling life.
Luckily, this habit of clinging to unhelpful thoughts can be broken. Here is how you can own your life and make sure you live it to the fullest.

1) Know Your Power Of Choice
When you don’t own your life and everything that happens in it, you often end up saying that “I didn’t have a choice”. In reality, it is not the truth. There is almost always an option for you to choose from. When you acknowledge those options, you are practicing a sense of personal responsibility and conscious decision-making. Sounds tricky, I know.
But, believe it or not, you are always making choices – either intentionally or unintentionally. Nothing is happening by default.
Reminding yourself that you have the power to choose your next step, your actions, your words, and goals can be a huge factor that helps you to finally own your life.
2) Monitor Your Use Of Media
Media has a way bigger power on us than we think. When you are constantly watching the news and thinking of the world as a dangerous place, you might think that you are powerless. You may even think that everything is just getting worse and there is nothing that you can do about it.
This sense of powerlessness is easily induced by the media and if you want to own your life, it is time to change it.
Begin by understanding that not everything that happens in the world affects you directly. Yes, some of the things can actually have some effect on your life, and there are things happening that are so unjust and disturbing, that you can’t even fathom that they’re real. However, your life is your life, and not all of those bad things have a direct correlation with it.
Limit the use of media and enjoy other activities that can actually make your life healthy.
3) Notice Your Blaming Patterns
Sometimes, we don’t even realize that we are blaming others until it becomes our habit. So, if you want to own your life and stop blaming others, you have to be conscious of this habit the next time something happens. Notice your first reaction towards anything that happens to you and see if you want to blame others for it.
If so, stop for a moment and ask yourself, “what is my role in this?” Try to reduce this automated response by taking a break every time before saying or thinking anything negative.
4) Start To Look For The Solutions
The best way to own your life is to think that it is you who is going to resolve the issues. If you keep waiting for others to save you or help you, you will be moving through life at a very limited speed. The next time something bad happens to you, rather than saying “I don’t know what to do”, think about what you can do to make it better.
There are multiple areas of your life like health, relationships, career, and education that need your attention and you can’t just ignore them by not taking responsibility or waiting for others to help you… After all, it is your life and only you can make it better.
Begin by taking responsibility and being proactive. Start with small steps, and start doing the things that are important.

5) Be Accountable
If you want to own your life and take the best from it, you should also start being accountable, from this moment on. If you hold yourself accountable for everything that is happening to you, you will build a wonderful sense of responsibility – and this, my dear, can help you to move mountains! You will be better at handling every situation because it will be you who initiates the responsive part, and you who pushes forward until the problem is solved or the goal is achieved.
Being accountable to yourself also makes you feel more active, productive, and energetic every day.
6) Forgive And Let Go
If you are holding on the things that have happened in the past, or the people who hurt you, you are never going to own your life, because it will be the past or those other people who own YOU.
By holding a grudge and making it affect your present life, you are making yourself miserable. You have to let go of the things that have happened in the past and accept what you have in the present.
