Exercise is something we all know we should be doing. And yet, if you asked everyone in a room to give you one reason they don’t exercise, you’ll probably hear 100 different reasons. People make excuses, blame their busy schedule, or just don’t like exercising. But chances are, if you were to convince these individuals to try exercising regularly for a month — they would soon find out how much happier and healthier they feel after exercising consistently. Exercise can be the linchpin that helps improve other areas of your life.

Exercise can help reduce your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. It also reduces stress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional problems. Exercise is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.

The benefits of exercise are most evident when you do it regularly. You don’t have to do strenuous workouts every day to get these benefits — even moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking or gardening, has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity.

Regular exercise strengthens your heart muscle to pump more efficiently and lowers blood fats called triglycerides that can clog arteries. As a result, exercise can reduce your risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD), making your heart less efficient at pumping blood through narrowed coronary arteries that feed oxygen-rich blood to the heart’s muscle tissue. CAD is one of the leading causes of death in the United States today.

 

Exercise can help you to sleep better

 

You may think that exercise has nothing to do with sleep, but it does. Your body releases endorphins, natural pain relievers, and mood enhancers when you exercise. Exercise also helps you wind down after a long day of work or school by releasing dopamine into your brain, which helps with relaxation and feelings of reward. This can help you fall asleep faster and make it easier to wake up in the morning without feeling groggy or tired from lack of sleep.

  • Regular exercise can also help ward off depression because it releases endorphins (feel-good chemicals) in your body, making you feel good about yourself. In addition, research has shown that people who get regular aerobic exercise are less likely to develop depression than those who don’t exercise regularly.

There’s no greater blessing than a healthy body, so if you’re not exercising, there’s no time like the present to get started. Whether you exercise in a gym or at home –or even if you just do things around the house–the important thing is to start today.
