Hair loss can be a challenging situation to deal with, that’s for sure. There can be so many reasons why your hair is falling out, that usually, it’s pretty hard to pinpoint the main problem. You never know whether it’s a hormonal disbalance, poor nutrition, or maybe you’ve been stressing out a little too much.

It’s important to know that it’s normal to lose SOME hair. It’s when SOME becomes A LOT, the problem of hair loss begins.

Thankfully, no matter the cause, there are a few ways to improve your hair health and stop hair loss, or at least to minimize this problem.

Here’s how you can stop hair loss with a few simple changes in your hair and lifestyle routines.

Helpful Things To Do If You’re Trying To Stop Hair Loss

1. Minimize heat styling

I know, there is nothing as satisfying as freshly blow-dried hair that falls on your back like a waterfall… But, you have to remember that all heat styling tools do irreversible damage to your hair. Heat causes your hair to become dry, brittle, and prone to breaking like nothing else – all of the things that contribute to your hair loss problem.

If you want to stop hair loss, let your hair to air-dry as often as you can, and reach the styling tools only occasionally. And when you do that, don’t forget to apply a heat protectant serum to protect your hair from the damaging heat!

2. Don’t tie your hair too tight

A lot of women love to tie their hair in a bun or ponytail, especially in summer. Yet the constant traction on the hair roots weakens them over time and may result in more hair loss than you would like. If you want to prevent this, ditch the ponytails and choose looser hairstyles for your hair (like loose braids or buns).

3. Feed your hair with coconut oil

If you suffer from hair loss, it may be because your hair is not receiving proper nourishment. Applying coconut oil to the scalp (before washes) helps to provide essential fatty acids to the hair root, making them stronger. Coconut oil also moisturizes your tresses and makes your hair smooth and shiny by rebuilding the bonds in your strands.

4. Massage your scalp

Scalp massage is a wonderful way to prevent hair loss, and massaging just for a few minutes per day can help you stop hair loss. When you massage the scalp, it stimulates the blood flow to the roots, and this blood provides essential nutrients and oxygen to your hair to make it stronger.

To stop hair loss, I highly recommend a coconut oil massage. Simply scoop a generous amount of coconut oil, warm it up between your fingers and spend 10 minutes massaging it into your hair roots. Your hair will be so happy!

5. Choose a sulfate-free shampoo

Sulfates are harsh surfactants that clean the hair but also strip it of all the moisture and protective oils. Using a sulfate-free shampoo will really help to stop hair loss, as it will gently remove impurities without stripping and weakening your hair. Also, make sure to stay away from harsh chemicals like parabens and silicones that can also adversely affect your hair’s health.

Checking the shampoo ingredients can save you a lot of trouble when finding the right shampoo. Look out for ones that actively help you protect your hair.

For example, keratin is an active protein that keeps hair strong and healthy. Meanwhile, tea tree oil and peppermint have antimicrobial properties, preventing hair loss caused by infection.

Your ideal shampoo ingredients will depend on the cause of your hair loss. If you need help deciding which you need, see a dermatologist to determine the cause and get the appropriate treatment.

6. Take multivitamins for your hair

If your hair doesn’t stop falling out no matter what you do, it may indicate a nutritional deficiency. Adding a vitamin supplement is a good idea because our hair really needs all those vitamins and minerals to stay healthy and if your hair roots have been malnourished, no wonder you’re experiencing hair loss!

To stop hair loss, choose a supplement with Zinc, Biotin, Omega-3 fatty acids, and Vitamin D to give your hair some extra support and encourage its health.

Aside from multivitamins, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections can help restore your crowning glory. It’s a natural and effective hair loss solution that stimulates growth and enhances hair thickness. Check out PRP kits online, like these ones from Selphyl.

7. Improve your diet

Speaking of nutrition, if you want to stop hair loss fast, just popping a pill won’t be enough. It is just as imperative to nourish your hair from within, with enough nutrients that make your hair stronger – and there’s more to that than vitamins.

To stop hair loss, adopt a healthy diet that’s full of color and variety. Consume fresh fruits, vegetables, and most importantly – eat plenty of protein to fulfill your body’s nutritional requirements (protein helps keratin synthesis, which is structurally essential to growing new hair).

Eggs are also rich in protein, biotin, and zinc, which all promote good hair health.

Biotin, in particular, is a B vitamin that helps produce keratin, the protein that makes up hair. On the other hand, zinc helps regulate oil production in the scalp.

Salmon is packed with protein, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids, helping reduce inflammation, a contributing factor to hair loss. Lean meat is another good source of hair-friendly nutrients. It’s abundant in iron, which helps carry oxygen to the hair follicles.

8. Be VERY gentle while drying your hair

If you dry your hair by vigorously rubbing it with a towel, you are setting yourself up for failure. This will leave your hair tangled, broken, dry, and weak – none of this will help you to stop hair loss. Try to squeeze the excess water using a microfiber towel (gently!), and then allow your hair to air dry. If you can’t live without your blow dryer, you can also compromise by setting its temperature at low or cold, if possible.

9. Don’t brush your hair when it is wet

Most of us come out of the shower and directly brush our wet hair. But hair is weak and especially prone to breaking while wet… Brushing wet hair can result in split ends, brittleness, and the dreaded hair loss.

I know it’s hard to change old habits, but if you want to stop hair loss, trade your hairbrush for a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush. This will radically reduce the pulling and tugging on your hair roots.

10. Move your body (yes!)

While the link between hair fall and exercise may not be immediately apparent, let me assure you that exercise does play an important role in regulating hair loss! When you are physically healthy and active, your metabolism stays regulated, and your hormone levels are balanced. Some women may experience hair loss due to a hormonal imbalance, and exercise can immensely help to rectify this problem and stop the hair loss for them. Also, exercise is great for your whole body, so it’s just another reason to do it!

Cardio exercises like running, biking, and swimming help improve blood circulation throughout the body, including the scalp. Aim for at least 30 minutes to perform a cardio exercise most days of the week.

Even if these solutions don’t stop hair loss for you completely, they can at least make the situation better. And if nothing ever helps your hair, it’s a good idea to consult a doctor – sometimes, a particular deficiency, medication, or a health issue can be a reason why nothing works to stop hair loss. Plus, it’s always a good idea to get a checkup! Also, there are plenty of hair loss treatments available these days that help you tackle hair loss on a more advanced level.

I hope you’ll try implementing these things to stop hair loss, and that your hair will get really strong and healthy again.
