However, it is important to let go of your despondency after a while.

Of course, as you are well aware, beating sadness isn’t all that simple.
In fact, you may have tried all the traditional outlets and found that they have failed you.
Yet, it isn’t time to sink back into your grief and despair just yet.
Instead, give these unusual tactics a try.
You may be surprised to learn that they work for you quite well!
3 Unusual Ways To Battle Sadness
1. Find a Way to Help Others
A state of prolonged sadness can have a negative impact on your self-image or self-esteem.
It can often feel like you aren’t good at anything or may not be deserving of love or happiness.
Needless to say, such feelings will only cause you to further spiral into depression.
This is why it can help quite a bit to lend a helping hand to someone else.
You can assist a friend, family member, or neighbor.
You can even sign up with a charity, homeless shelter, or similar organization.
All that is important is that you make an effort to help someone.
When you take this initiative, you are creating a goal for yourself, giving you something to focus on and channel your energy towards.
This can help to reduce the negative emotions that you associate with your life.
More importantly, helping others makes you feel better about yourself and lets you re-frame your self-image.
2. Get a Pet
Did you know that people with cats or dogs are less likely to suffer from depression?
It’s true!
This is due to a number of positive elements of having a pet in your life.
For one thing, they provide you with companionship and make you feel less lonely.
For another, they can keep you entertained and upbeat with their antics and playfulness.
Animals such as dogs can also encourage you to get more exercise and to socialize more as well.
And, in doing so, relieve your feelings of sadness.
Both cats and dogs tend to highly attuned to how their humans are feeling and will comfort you when you are down.
They can also equip you with a sense of responsibility as they do need to be cared for.
In some cases, you can actually have a mental health professional “prescribe” you a pet.
These are known as emotional support animals (ESAs).
The great thing about ESAs is that unlike service animals don’t have to meet specific requirements.
As a registration agency US Service Animals explains it, any domestic animal such as a cat or a dog can be an emotional support animal.
They further emphasize that such animals don’t require any kind of training either.
Registering your pet with legitimate services simply makes it easier for you to take your pet to work or get on a plane with you.
3. Try Your Hand at Gardening
Gardening isn’t something that too many people do anymore.
This is either because they don’t have space or time.
Or, it could be simply that you are lacking interest in this particular pastime.
Regardless, it is something that you should definitely try out for yourself.
There was a study conducted on people who had been diagnosed with depression.
These individuals were encouraged to join a 12-week horticulture program.
During this period, these people experienced improvements in their mood after gardening.
These benefits were seen long after people had engaged in the program as well.
Once again, this has to do with moving away from negative thoughts and rumination.
Gardening allows you to focus your attention on the task at hand.
It also feels good to be around plants and if you are exposed to sunlight during this time, that’s even better!
As an added bonus, you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor, allowing you to feel pride in your work.
It doesn’t matter whether you have a garden or a backyard.
You can grow plants inside your home, at your window sill.
If you choose, you can even join a community garden or rent out a plot.
Your opportunities are endless so go ahead and give it a try!
These are some of the more unusual ways that you can boost your mood and battle sadness.
