Do you often have to face and fix different issues in relation to your home? They could range from leaking taps, clogged drains, paint chip-offs, minor water damage, etc. The easy route is to phone service providers every other week or so to fix your house problems.

However, solely relying on handypersons can be expensive over time. Luckily, did you know that with a little brushing up of your skills you don’t always need to call a repair professional near you? There are numerous home fix-it skills you can learn that’ll help you address minor home concerns in a breeze. These skills include, but aren’t limited to:

Adding Window Treatments

Most residential buildings come with standard glass pane fit-outs. Sometimes, these windows don’t meet all your privacy and lighting needs. In such cases, adding window treatments is the ideal option.

Window treatments are modifications you add to your windows for aesthetics and functionality. And it’s something you can easily do.

The first step is gathering the tools you need. Start with getting your ideal window treatment, be it Roman shades for windows, drapes, curtains, or blinds. Next, you’ll need a drill, screwdriver, ladder, measuring tape, and level.

With the tools ready, do the following:

  • Measure your windows to get the right size for your window treatment.
  • Put in place the anchoring accessories, like fasteners. Ensure you secure them well, considering the weight of your chosen treatment.
  • Hang your window treatment.

Ensure you buy quality treatments as you add them to your home. Look out for cheap blinds even as you focus on quality. Your aim is affordability without compromising quality.

Painting

Common point issues are chipping off, stains, and unsightly old paint, all of which you can handle independently.

To perform a paint job, you’ll need paint, a paintbrush or roller, a ladder, safety eyewear, and overalls to protect your clothes from getting dirty.

In this case, do the following:

  • Prepare the surface by removing any dirt and ensuring it’s dry.
  • Layer the paint in two or three coats with a paint brush or roller. Ensure you take note of brush marks; you want to avoid them for pristine results.
  • Allow adequate drying before touching the surface.

As you address your paint issues as do-it-yourself (DIY), ensure you use quality paint for the project. It’ll ensure you get long-lasting and high-quality results.

Basic Plumbing

Plumbing is your household’s main and only way of accessing water for your daily chores and needs. Unfortunately, the constant use of plumbing pipes and fixtures leads to malfunctions, and wear and tear. Some common plumbing issues you’re likely to face are clogged drains, leaking pipes, blocked sinks, and slow drains.

The tools you’ll need to handle basic plumbing issues are needle nose pliers, a plunger, augers, an adjustable wrench, and working gloves.

The plumbing repair procedure depends on the situation you’re facing. Suppose you have a clogged sink. Do the following:

  • Turn off your tap.
  • Insert the sink auger down the drain and rotate it. The rotation will make the items clogging the sink attach to the auger.
  • Pull out the auger and dispose of the collected debris. Repeat this until the sink is unclogged and the water drains faster.

Meanwhile, if the issue is a leaking pipe, it’d help to do the following:

  • Turn off the main water valve. A small error could make water burst into your home and cause water damage.
  • Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the joint with the leak. It’d help to check and tighten the other joints as a preventive measure.

Drywall Repair

Most homes have drywall as their wall or ceiling. It can be a gypsum board, sheet rock, or any other available type.

The common issues you’ll likely encounter with your drywall are cracks, water damage, and the like. Addressing these issues requires sanders, a putty knife, an applicator, and a joint compound. Most of these problems require you to do the following:

  • Prepare the surface. It entails exposing the surface you’re repairing by a few inches around it. Additionally, roughen the edges for better bonding with the joint compound.
  • Fill the area with the joint compound using a putty knife or applicator. Compress to ensure there are no air spaces between the compound.
  • Smoothen the top to prevent bulges on the final surface.
  • Finish off with sanding and painting to its original or new color that uplifts your mood. Nonetheless, ensure the compound dries first before painting.

As you repair your drywall, using the right joint compound is important. The difference between the types arises on the using stage and available timeframe. Concerning stage, you’ll find all-purpose, taping, and topping compounds. On the other hand, you’ll find hot mud compound concerning the timeframe.

The discussion above highlights some easy home fix-it skills you can learn to address common home issues. It further details the tools you require and the basic procedure for executing them. From this, it’s clear they’re easy to execute. It’d help to practice to perfect these skills and learn as much as possible from online platforms.
